Wspominając Halloween: Nie tylko cukierki i przebrania (Remembering Halloween: not just candy and costumes)

Halloween - chyba najbardziej kontrowersyjne święto amerykańskie. Podejście do tego święta zależy od miejsca zamieszkania. W Stanach jest to dzień przebierańców, zbierania cukierków, wyzywających kostiumów, i imprez do białego rana. Towarzyszą jemu duchy, pajęczyny, pająki, udekorowane dynie, szkielety, i inne rodzaju stworki czy dziwolągi wzbudzające strach.

Jako dziecko, przebierałam się. Ponieważ kostiumy dla dzieci jak i dla dorosłych trochę kosztują, często tworzyłam kostiumy sama. Byłam myszką, pszczółką, cyganką, Drakulą, Kleopatrą. Chodziłam zbierać słodycze po sklepach na Greenpoincie gdzie mieszkałam w towarzystwie taty lub koleżanek. Wracałam zawsze z workiem słodyczy, po czym robiliśmy z rodzicami przegląd słodyczy, eliminując te otwarte czy bez papierków, i eliminując te mniej lubiane (tata zjadał resztki.)

W szkole dzieci zajmują się tworzeniem dekoracji takich jak duszki z kleju, próbują ciasto z dyni, dekorują torby na cukierki i dzielą się słodyczami. Przestałam obchodzić Halloween mniej więcej w wieku 9 lat, gdy przebieranie się było już dziecinne. To święto zaczęło mi się źle kojarzyć po odbytej strzelaninie w sklepie, w którym godzinę wcześniej dostałam słodycze, czy po rozbitych jajkach na ulicach, oknach, samochodach. W końcu maska w dniu przebierańców to idealna okazja do bycia anonimowym. Niektórzy traktują to zbyt poważnie, a przecież w tym dniu chodzi o zabawę, nie o robienie krzywdy. 

Na studiach dostałam zaproszenie na imprezę Halloweenową. Nie świadoma zasady numer jeden, że im bardziej skąpy kostium tym lepiej, czułabym się jak postać Lindsay Lohan w słynnym Mean Girls (zjawiła się w koszmarnym kostiumie na imprezę seksownych przebrań.) Na imprezę nie poszłam w końcu, ale pod blokiem na Manhattanie miałam paradę Halloweenową, a przebierańce pomimo nawet 5 stopni chodzili przebrani do rana w kostiumach, na które nigdy w życiu bym nawet nie wpadła, począwszy od Pani As do seksownej pielęgniarki do Tęczy.

Pomysł na post o Halloween pojawił się w dniu dzisiejszym, gdy zapytana o to "pogańskie, nienormalne, okultystyczne święto" odpowiadałam, że tak, jako dziecko się przebierałam, nie, nie jest to sprzeczne z moim wyzwaniem, gdyż byłam dzieckiem! Z kolegą, który też mieszkał w Stanach, jako jedyni byliśmy świadomi znaczenia tego święta. Jest to fajne święto, ale dla dzieci. Zbierają sobie cukierki, przebierają się, dobrze się bawią, co w tym złego? A to, że Halloween zmierza w złym kierunku jeśli chodzi o dorosłych, to już inna sprawa.

Dla Polaków, to Święto jest zazwyczaj traktowane negatywnie gdyż jest to wigilia Święta Zmarłych. Tradycyjnie, w 18 wieku, w tym dniu świętowało się zmarłych na cmentarzach, i był to początek trydium, czyli Halloween, Święta Zmarłych i Dzień Zaduszny. W Polsce przecież Święto Zmarłych jest ważnym świętem.
 

Niestety, w dzisiejszych czasach, Halloween nie jest już tylko zabawą. Liczne strzelaniny, gangi atakujące kobiety, rzucanie jajkami czy kapustą w przechodniów, straszenie osób starszych zaliczają się do Halloweenowych "zabaw", wraz z nadmiernym spożywaniem alkoholu i jego konsekwencjami. Dzieci w gimnazjum ubierają się w stroje zarezerwowane dla dorosłych. Tak jest, ale o tym się nie mówi, bo lepiej zazdrościć fajnego przebrania, parady, imprezy i nadmiaru darmowych słodyczy.A dzień później wspominamy naszych bliskich, którzy odeszli.

Na szczęście, to Święto się u nas nie przyjęło i ogranicza się do dnia przebierańców w przedszkolu czy w szkole. A nawet jeśli dziecko przebrane za słodkie stworzenie zbiera cukierki od bliskich, to co w tym złego? 

Halloween: Not just candy and costumes

Halloween - perhaps the most controversial American holiday. The approach to this holiday depends on where you live. In the US it is a day of costumes, trick or treating, provocative outfits, and parties till dawn. Accompanied by ghosts, ghouls, cobwebs, spiders, decorated pumpkins, skeletons, and other kinds of creatures and freaks evoking fear. 

As a child, I dressed up. Since costumes for children and adults are costly, I often created them on my own. I was a mouse, a bee, a gypsy, Dracula, Cleopatra. I went trick or treating to shops in Greenpoint where I lived in the company of my dad or friends. I came back with a bag of sweets, then did  an overview of them, eliminating the ones that were open or without papers, and eliminating the ones less liked (dad ate the leftovers.) 

In school children are involved in creating decorations such as glue ghosts, try pumpkin pie, decorate candy bags and share sweets. I stopped celebrating Halloween around the age of 9, when dressing up seemed childish. This holiday took a wrong turn, after a shooting in a store I trick or treated in an hour earlier or the sight of broken eggs on the streets, windows and cars. After all, a  mask is an ideal opportunity to be anonymous. Some treat it too seriously, though on this day, it should be all about having fun, not about doing harm to others. 

In college, I got an invitation to a Halloween party. Not aware of the number one rule, that the more skimpy the costume the better, I would have felt like Lindsay Lohan's character in  the famous Mean Girls (she showed up in a horrible costume for a party of sexy disguises.) I didn't go in the end, but saw the Halloween parade in Manhattan on my block and all the costumes despite 5 degrees C weather worn until the wee hours of the morning, which I never in my life would have even thought existed, from Queen of Ace to the sexy nurse to Rainbow Brite. 

The idea for a post about Halloween came today, when questioned about this "pagan, abnormal, occult feast" at work, I answered that yes, as a child I dressed up, and no, it is not incompatible with my views or religion, since I was a kid! Along with a colleague, who also lived in the US, we were the only ones aware of the meaning of this holiday. This is a fun holiday, but for children. They trick or treat, dress up, have fun, what's wrong with that? But the fact that Halloween is moving in the wrong direction when it comes to adults, is another thing. 

In Poland, the holiday is usually considered negative because it is the eve of All Saints Day. Traditionally, in the 18th century, on this day the dead were celebrated in cemeteries, and this was the beginning of a three day feast, Meaning of Halloween, All Saints Day and All Souls Day. In Poland, All Saints Day is one of the most important days of the year.

Unfortunately, in modern times, Halloween is not just about fun. Numerous shootings, gangs attacking women, the throwing of eggs or cabbage at passers-by, scaring the elderly are among the "fun" Halloween activities, along with excessive alcohol consumption and its consequences. Children in high school dress up in costumes reserved for adults. This is how it is, but no one talks about it, because it's better to envy the costumes, parades, parties and excessive amounts of free candy. The next day, we remember our loved ones who have passed away.

Fortunately, this holiday hasn't been adopted here and is limited to a day of dress-up in kindergarten or school. And even if a child dressed up as a cute creature collects candy from loved ones, what's wrong with that?
