New York City in December

Widziałam Nowy Jork o każdej porze roku, i choć miasto jest piękne cały rok, to właśnie w grudniu otacza je niesamowita Świąteczna magia. Jak zwiedzać Nowy Jork, to najlepiej w grudniu.

Oto kilka powodów:

1. Idealna pogoda: Latem temperatura jest nieznośna, potrafi być 35 stopni i 100% wilgotności, a wyjście na ulicę to jak wejście do sauny. Wiosna jest krótka, jesień także, a temperatura zmienna - nie wiadomo więc co ze sobą zabrać. Zatem w grudniu, temperatura utrzymuje się na plusie zazwyczaj, bywa 6 stopni, jak i 10, czy nawet 0. Śniegu raczej nie ma, prędzej spadnie deszcz. Jest dużo słońca, a słońce zachodzi najwcześniej o 16.30.

2. Dekoracje: Architektura i drapacze chmur są niezmienne od lat, czy latem czy zimą zachwycają i przyprawiają turystów o ból szyi od zerkania w górę. Lecz w grudniu wszystko wygląda jeszcze piękniej, oświetlone czerwono-złotymi czy niebiesko-srebrnymi świątecznymi dekoracjami. Na Rockefeller Center zamieszkuje ogromna choinka i białe aniołki, na szóstej alei zaś wielkie czerwone bombki na wodzie czy lampki choinkowe w rozmiarze XXXXXL. Wszystko od Grand Plaza Hotel po Katedrę Św. Patryka jest udekorowane. Dodatkowo można podziwiać wystawy sklepowe np. przy Macy's na 34tej, Lord & Taylor przy 39tej czy Saks Fifth Avenue przy 51ej.

3. Zimowe atrakcje: Nie ma jak jazda na łyżwach na darmowym lodowisku w Bryant Park wśród drapaczy chmur i dużej choinki, a potem wypicie gorącej czekolady czy kawy, odwiedzając "Holiday Shops" w parku. Jest też fajne lodowisko w Central Parku, w Seaporcie, czy w Rockefeller Center. Spacer wzdłuż piątej i szóstej alei to jak walka o przetrwanie, patrząc na codzienne tłumy w tym okresie. Warto także zobaczyć Rockefeller Christmas Show ze słynnymi tancerkami Rockettes. Zapach pieczonych kasztanów unosi się w powietrzu, a gorące prażone w miodzie orzeszki najlepiej smakują gdy na dworze zimno.

4. Przeceny: Before-Thanksgiving sale, After-Thanksgiving Sale, Before-Christmas sale, After-Christmas Sale. Wygląda na to, że tu ciągle są przeceny. Przed Świętami sklepy zachęcają do kupowania świątecznych prezentów, zaś po Świętach - do oddawania tych niechcianych i kupowania "ostatnich rzeczy z kolekcji." W końcu zaraz wkroczy do sklepów kolekcja letnia. Już w listopadzie, a najlepiej w grudniu, można kupić przecenione ubrania, kosmetyki czy sprzęt. Warto więc śledzić promocje. Np. Gap przed świętami miał jeden dzień zniżki 60% z przecenionych produktów, po czym wrócił do 40%, a potem znów 50-60%. 

5. Święta w Nowojorskim stylu: Nowojorskie święta kojarzą się z Kevinem samym w Nowym Jorku, który zachwyca się udekorowanym Grand Plaza Hotel, choinką przy Rockefeller, i dekoracjami na piątej i szóstej alei. W pierwszy dzień świąt, czyli jedyny dzień świąt dla nowojorczyków, rozpakowuje się rano prezenty. Potem warto iść na mszę do pięknej katedry św. Patryka, słuchając wykonania "Cichej nocy" w trzech językach i odwiedzając piękną szopkę, po czym przejść Piątą Aleją do Central Parku, podziwiając dekoracje. Niektórzy preferują romantyczną przejażdżkę konną bryczką po parku, inni zaś wskakują w dres i idą pobiegać. Na luzie, bez sztywnego siedzenia przy stole. Warto wstąpić na gorąca kawę i ciacho, bo przecież prawie wszystko jest czynne, a na pewno lokalne budki i sklepiki (i McDonalds). Do końca roku można cieszyć się przecenami i jeszcze udekorowanymi choinkami, a w Sylwestra podziwiać opadającą kulę na Times Square.

Polecam zatem urlop w Nowym Jorku właśnie w grudniu, wraz ze świętami. Bilety w tym okresie nie są zbyt drogie (z Warszawy kosztują ok. $550-650 w obie strony, kupione wcześniej np. przez Expedia.)

I've seen New York at all times of the year, and although the city is beautiful all year round, it looks best in December when buildings are surrounded by amazing Christmas magic. When visiting New York, it is best to do so in December.

Here are a few reasons:

1. Perfect weather: During the summer the temperatures are unbearable, it can be 35 degrees C with 100% humidity, and stepping onto the street is like stepping into a sauna. Spring is short, so is autumn, and during both temperatures vary, so it's difficult knowing what to take with you. Thus, in December, the temperature is steady and usually around 6 or 10 degrees C, sometimes even O. There isn't much snow, it would more likely rain. There is plenty of sun, and the sun sets the earliest at 4.30 pm.

2. Decorations: The architecture and skyscrapers are unchanged for years, whether in the summer or winter seasons, delighting tourists who suffer from neck pain from looking up. But in December, everything looks even more beautiful, illuminated by red and gold or blue and silver Christmas decorations. The Rockefeller Center features the giant Christmas tree and the popular white angels, and sixth avenue has big red ornaments on the water and Christmas tree lights in size XXXXXL. Everything from the Grand Plaza Hotel to St. Patrick's Cathedral is decorated. Additionally, you can admire the shop windows, especially at Macy's on 34th, Lord & Taylor on 39th or Saks Fifth Avenue at 51st.

3. Winter fun: There's nothing like iceskating for free in Bryant Park among the skyscrapers and a large Christmas tree, and then drinking hot chocolate or coffee while visiting the "Holiday Shops" in the park. There are also nice ice rinks in Central Park, South Street Seaport or at Rockefeller Center. Strolling along Fifth and Sixth Avenues is like a fight for survival, considering the daily crowds during this period. It is also worth seeing the Rockefeller Christmas show with the famous Rockettes. The smell of roasted chestnuts floats in the air, and hot honey-roasted peanuts taste best when it's cold outside.

4. Sales: Before-Thanksgiving sale, After-Thanksgiving Sale, Before-Christmas sale, After-Christmas Sale. It seems like there are always sales. Before Christmas, shops encourage shoppers to buy Christmas presents, and after Christmas - to return unwanted gifts and buy "the last of the current collection." After all, the summer collections is soon introduced in stores. Already in November, and definitely in December, you can buy discounted clothes, cosmetics or electronics. So keep track of promotions on a daily basis. For example, Gap before Christmas had one day of 60% discounts off of discounted items, then went back to 40%, and then again to 50-60% after the holidays.

5. New York style Christmas: Christmas in New York is often associated with "Home Alone 2" where Kevin admired the decorated Grand Plaza Hotel, the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, and the decorations on Fifth and Sixth Avenues. The first day of Christmas, which is the only day of Christmas for New Yorkers, starts with unwrapping of gifts. Then, it's worth heading to Christmas Mass at the beautiful St. Patrick's Cathedral and listening to "Silent Night" being performed in three languages and visiting the beautiful Christmas nativity. Then, walk down Fifth Avenue to Central Park, admiring the holiday scenery. Some prefer a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride through the park, while others jump in sweats and go jogging. At ease, without sitting rigidly at the table. Enjoy a hot cup of coffee and a cake, because almost everything is open, and certainly the local booths and shops are (and McDonald's). From then until the end of the year, you can enjoy the markdowns and the still-decorated Christmas trees, and then ravel at the New Year's Eve ball falling in Times Square.

I encourage to visit New York City in December and to spend the holidays there. Tickets for this period are not too expensive (from Warsaw they cost approx. $550-650 both ways, bought ahead of time through Expedia.)
